In action: Hayden Panettiere is spotted on the set of Scream 4 in Detroit

She's most famous for playing cheerleader Claire Benet in Heroes.

But now Hayden Panettiere is about to star in another of the most well-known movie franchises of all time as she starts work on film Scream 4.

The 20-year-old actress was spotted on set of the new film in Detroit, and says she is having a 'blast' shooting the scary movie which reunites original cast members Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell.

Scream 4 will be released 11 years after Scream 3 was released and 15 years after the original.

Hayden told MTV News: 'I think it's just perfect timing, the amount of time that has passed since the last one came out.

'For an audience that is so well-versed in Scream films and in what happens and who becomes the killer and everything it's trickier to throw them a curveball, but I think they've done a really cool job with the script. We've had a blast on it.'

And Hayden, who plays film nerd Kirby Reed, the best friend of one of the main character Jill Kessler, played by Emma Roberts, says it was an honour working with renowned director Wes Craven.

She added to Access Hollywood: 'Wes Craven is an amazing human being and such a nice guy. It is such a pleasure to work with him... you can feel the crews at ease.

'They’re able to have fun - it’s not like twisting their arm to come to work. They actually really, really enjoy it, so it’s been really fun thus far.'

Shooting for the film has seen Detroit transformed into the location for the bloody killings, with the famous Scream masks dotted throughout the city.

And the majority of the scenes so far have revolved around the Woodsboro High School featuring the new young cast members including Hayden, Emma, Eridk Knudsen and Marielle Jaffe.

The first three Scream movies were smash hits, revitalising the slasher film genre in the mid 1990s and spawning a slew of imitators.

The original was one of the highest grossing films of the year when it was released in 1996 and has taken in an impressive £114million worldwide.

The movies were inspired by the Halloween film series and the Gainseville Ripper murders of 1990.
